The Higher Education Commission (HEC) issued a warning on Sunday advising students against enrolling in two-year programmes that have been discontinued since the academic year 2019.

The alert, posted on HEC’s official Instagram account, emphasized that “two-year BA/Sc and MA/MSc programmes were phased out by June 30, 2022,” despite some institutions continuing to admit students after the deadlines set by HEC.

It cautioned students, parents, and stakeholders against pursuing admissions in these programmes as degrees obtained from them will not be recognized or attested by HEC.

According to HEC’s official statement, the decision to discontinue these two-year degree programmes was made in 2004 to align with international education standards. While universities were given until 2016 to phase out these programmes, some continued beyond the stipulated timeline.

The two-year associate degree programmes, once allowed by HEC, were intended as alternatives to bachelor’s degree programmes like BA and BSc, equating to 14 years of education. Upon completion, graduates could seek admission into the fifth semester of a four-year BS programme.
