Turkey Blocks Instagram Access Without Explanation

By

Aug 8, 2024

Turkey has blocked access to Instagram, the infotech regulator announced on Friday, without giving a reason or stating how long the ban will last. The block affects both the website and mobile app.

This move came after Turkish communications official Fahrettin Altun criticized Instagram for blocking condolence posts about the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, a key Hamas official, calling it “censorship.”

Instagram’s parent company, Meta Platforms Inc., has not commented on the ban or Altun’s remarks. Turkey’s Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) published the ban decision on its website on August 2.
