A knife attack at a children’s dance workshop in Southport, Merseyside, has left three children dead and tem others injured, six critically. Two adults are also in critical condition after trying to protect the children. The event, themed around Taylor Swift, took place on Hart Street.
A 17-year-old from Banks, Lancashire, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. The motive for the attack is unclear, but it is not being treated as terrorism.
Witnesses described the scene as “horrendous.” The attack happened during the first week of the school summer holidays in the UK. Emergency services, including 13 ambulances and the fire service, rushed to the scene.
Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy expressed deep shock, highlighting the serious injuries inflicted on many children. She also praised the adults who tried to protect them.
The 17-year-old suspect will be questioned by detectives. The incident is not being treated as terror-related, although Counter-Terrorism Police North West have offered their support.
The King, Queen, and the Prince and Princess of Wales have expressed their shock and condolences. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also extended his sympathies to the victims and their families.
