Thar Desert Sand Ideal for Crafting Computer Chips

By

May 6, 2024

The Sindh Department of Information Technology, along with experts, has found that sand from Thar is perfect for making computer chips. This discovery could solve the growing demand for digital products. To address this potential, the Department has proposed establishing a factory for silicon chip wafers to the government.

Experts highlight that utilizing Thar sand in chip production can fulfill the significant need for digital devices. They emphasize that chip wafer production requires resources like coal, sand, water, and electricity, among which Thar sand stands out as the most suitable option.

The proposed chip wafer factory is estimated to cost around $450 million. Funding for this endeavor could potentially be sourced from the CPEC project. The chosen location for the factory spans 150 acres in the Tharparkar region of Islamkot.

The Sindh Information Technology Department has completed the initial paperwork for the Chip Wafer Foundry project and forwarded it to the relevant ministries for assessment and approval.
