The Sindh government has decided to take over the Sarim Burney Welfare Trust’s operations after its chief, Sarim Burney, was arrested on child trafficking charges. Burney is accused of trafficking children from Pakistan to the USA.
The Sindh Department of Social Welfare will now manage the orphanage previously run by Burney.
Burney was arrested on June 5 after returning from the USA, following a request from the American Consulate. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) filed a report accusing Burney of trafficking a newborn baby named Haya to the US. Haya was allegedly bought from her parents for Rs1 million.
The FIA claims Burney trafficked 20 newborns to the US last year under the guise of adoption, with 15 of them being girls. The agency also stated that records from the Pakistani embassy showed Burney’s wife was among those benefiting from the trafficking.
