The Sindh Home Department has banned 143 religious scholars from 13 districts from giving speeches or traveling for 60 days due to security concerns during Muharram, starting on July 8.
The ban takes effect immediately and was recommended by the inspector general of police to maintain law and order.
Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and is a sacred month when processions and gatherings commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his family.
The provincial government plans to suspend six social media apps, including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, to prevent the spread of hate material from Muharram 6 to 11.
The federal government has not yet decided to suspend internet services during Muharram, according to the Ministry of Interior.
The Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet today in Quetta to sight the Muharram crescent.
