Sindh Announces Free Electricity for Consumers Using Up to 100 Units Monthly

Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah has announced that electricity consumers in Karachi using less than 100 units per month will receive free electricity through solar energy projects. This initiative aims to lower their electricity bills and promote renewable energy.

To support this plan, the Sindh government has allocated Rs 5 billion for solar energy projects, including the distribution of 200,000 solar panels at subsidized rates. Consumers will pay only 20 percent of the cost, while the government covers the remaining 80 percent, making solar energy more affordable and accessible.

The Sindh government will also establish solar parks and mini-grid stations across the province, including Karachi, to generate and distribute solar power. This will ensure a steady supply of free electricity to eligible consumers, reducing dependence on traditional power sources and promoting clean, renewable energy.

This initiative is timely, as K-Electric, Karachi’s main electricity provider, faces financial challenges due to unpaid dues from various government departments and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board. These unpaid bills have strained K-Electric’s finances, risking power outages in the city.

The Sindh government’s solar energy initiative aims to alleviate some of K-Electric’s financial burdens by reducing the demand for traditional electricity. By providing free solar power to low-use consumers, the government hopes to ease pressure on the power grid and improve the overall stability of Karachi’s electricity supply.

Additionally, this move supports broader efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. The Sindh government’s investment in solar energy projects marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy future for the province.
