Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal have assured singer Shehzad Roy that the government will reconsider two decisions in the budget for 2024-25: removing the 10 percent sales tax on books and canceling the 25 percent tax rebate for teachers.
In a tweet, Shehzad Roy mentioned talking to both leaders and requesting these changes. They responded positively, indicating they would review these decisions.
The government’s Finance Bill for 2024 eliminated the tax rebate for teachers, causing concern in the education sector. This change affected teachers in private and public schools and universities.
Additionally, the Finance Bill proposed a 10 percent sales tax on books, although it’s uncertain if this will remain due to pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for Pakistan to tax stationery items, including books and other school supplies.
