Punjab Unveils First Satellite-Powered Environmental Monitoring System

By

Sep 9, 2024

Punjab has made a notable advancement in environmental protection with the launch of its inaugural satellite-linked monitoring system. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced the rollout of this cutting-edge technology, which integrates satellite data and drones to detect and address environmental violations.

The system has already demonstrated its effectiveness, leading to successful raids on factories violating environmental standards. Using drone technology, the Department of Environmental Protection identified and shut down two factories on Sheikhupura Road in Gujranwala that were emitting harmful smoke.

In collaboration with the district administration, authorities conducted thorough inspections, dismantling the kilns and sealing the factories to prevent further environmental harm.

Minister Aurangzeb revealed that, under the guidance of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the province will ramp up its anti-smog campaign ahead of the upcoming season. She underscored the critical need to tackle the root causes of smog, which contributes to approximately 250,000 deaths annually in the country.

Aurangzeb also called on all Punjabis to actively participate in combating smog, stressing the collective responsibility to safeguard public health.

In a separate update, Aurangzeb addressed the events of May 9, asserting that those responsible for planning and executing attacks against the state will face strict consequences. She warned that no leniency will be granted and highlighted the irony of a convict from May 9 seeking relief under the new NAB law, which some critics claim was designed to shield corrupt individuals.
