According to ABC News, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has halted the Punjab government’s plan to distribute electric bikes to students across the province. This decision was made during a hearing related to tackling smog.
The LHC has put the distribution of electric bikes on hold until further court orders and has requested detailed information from the Punjab government about the extent and execution of the initiative by May 13.
Additionally, the court has asked for a comprehensive report from the government detailing the number of electric bikes being distributed and their distribution locations.
Furthermore, the court suggested that the government should consider introducing electric buses as a measure to combat environmental pollution.
It’s worth noting that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz initiated the project to provide 20,000 bikes under the Chief Minister Youth Initiative on April 12.
Under this initiative, students, both male and female, have the opportunity to acquire motorcycles and e-bikes through convenient monthly installment plans. Male students can opt for a monthly payment of Rs 11,676, while female students can avail the offer at Rs 7,325 per month.
The distribution quota will be divided equally between male and female students in urban areas, whereas in rural areas, 70% of the quota will be allocated to male students and 30% to female students.
