In a significant move towards enhancing digital connectivity, the Punjab government has introduced a “Free WiFi” initiative in Nankana Sahib. This new venture follows the successful deployment of similar services in Lahore and Kasur.
In a recent statement, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz highlighted the achievement of the project, noting that over five million citizens in Lahore have utilized the free internet service, underscoring its success. She also announced that Safe Cities projects are set to commence in Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala, with plans for expansion to eighteen cities across Punjab in the near future.
Under the guidance of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the scope of Lahore’s free Wi-Fi service has been expanded significantly, with the number of access points increasing from 100 to 200. The expanded service now covers a variety of areas including Manga Mandi, Multan Road, Bund Road, Chuhng, Shahpur Kanjran, Sundar, Valencia, Maraka, and others.
The initiative is part of the ‘Digital Punjab’ vision, aiming to provide citizens with free emergency Wi-Fi access. This service is intended to be used for contacting police, family members, and for utilizing safety apps such as the Women Safety App and Punjab Police App. However, access to social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and other entertainment apps is not included in this service. Each free Wi-Fi device in Lahore has a range of up to 300 feet from its installation point.
