Punjab Commerce Colleges to Become IT Colleges

By

Jul 25, 2024

The Punjab government is shutting down all government commerce colleges and converting them into IT colleges. This change is meant to update the educational system and better fit current job market needs.

The Punjab Department of Higher Education has begun this process, focusing on 85 government commerce colleges across the province. This decision comes as fewer students are enrolling in commerce courses.

Currently, each commerce college has fewer than 100 students, and the government spends up to Rs. 300,000 per student. To reduce these costs and better align education with job market demands, the colleges will be transformed into IT institutes.

The upgrades will include new facilities such as co-working spaces for IT entrepreneurs and e-libraries for research. The project is set to begin within the next 10 days, with the aim of completing the conversion quickly. Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat stated that this initiative is intended to strengthen Punjab’s position in the global IT industry.
