PTA Sees Rise in VPN Usage, Urges Quick Finalization of Policy

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has raised alarms about the surge in illegal Virtual Private Network (VPN) usage, which has been contributing to a noticeable slowdown in internet services across the country.

According to PTA sources, the growing prevalence of unregistered VPNs is negatively impacting network performance. In response, the PTA has called on the Ministry of Information Technology to expedite the development and implementation of a long-awaited VPN policy.

The PTA has advocated for the swift finalization of a comprehensive VPN regulation framework. It clarified that the objective of this policy is not to ban VPNs but to ensure that their usage is regulated and that they comply with national standards.

While VPNs are not prohibited, the PTA stresses the need for their registration to combat the rise of illegal and unregistered VPN usage, which has become increasingly common among telecom users in Pakistan.
