PTA Proposes Required Local Registration for YouTube, Netflix, WhatsApp in Pakistan

The PTA has proposed a new rule requiring services like YouTube, Netflix, and WhatsApp to register locally in Pakistan. This rule is detailed in a 14-page document on the PTA website.

The proposed rule would affect all Over-The-Top (OTT) services, which include streaming and messaging apps. It suggests that these services should be monitored by various government ministries.

A key part of the proposal is that all personal data must be stored within Pakistan. This means companies like YouTube, Netflix, and WhatsApp would need to keep data about Pakistani users inside the country.

PTA spokesperson Malahat Obaid said the draft is open for public feedback until July 10. The public is invited to review the draft and share their opinions and suggestions.

The PTA seeks input from a broad range of people and organizations before finalizing the new rules, allowing citizens and stakeholders to express their views on how these regulations might affect them and the services they use.
