The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched the second phase of its operation to block illegal SIMs linked to expired CNICs, ARY News reported on Monday.

The PTA’s statement indicated that during the first phase, SIMs registered under fake or canceled CNICs were blocked. Now, the focus has shifted to blocking SIMs registered on CNICs that expired before 2017.

Since August 16, over 69,000 illegal SIMs have been blocked, with the PTA utilizing data from NADRA to identify and remove these SIMs.

In the upcoming third phase, the PTA plans to block SIMs registered under the names of deceased individuals. Mobile users are being informed about potential SIM blockages through awareness messages.

The PTA has also issued a warning that fake SIMs are being used for illegal activities such as terrorism and financial fraud, urging citizens to renew their CNICs to prevent their SIMs from being blocked.
