In a startling revelation, a recent notification from the Ministry of Interior has disclosed that 72 investigative officers had unauthorized access to telecom consumer data, as reported by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Following investigations into 21 data leakage complaints, it was uncovered that these officers were involved in the illicit sale of personal data. Police officers from Balochistan, Punjab, and Sindh were found to be selling consumer information for between Rs. 2,500 and Rs. 3,000, amassing earnings of up to Rs. 250,000.

When confronted, the implicated officers claimed their accounts had been compromised. The PTA has formally notified the Ministry of Interior about these breaches and the involvement of law enforcement in data sales.

In response, the PTA is urging the Ministry of Interior to revise its Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and implement a robust strategy to curb data leaks by police and security personnel.
