During the International Day of Youth event hosted by the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif unveiled a major initiative: the government will distribute one million smartphones to top students throughout the year. These smartphones will be a gift from the federal government.
Sharif emphasized the transformative potential of Pakistan’s youth, stating that with access to modern education and resources, they could propel the nation to new heights. He envisions using these tools, including modern education, IT, and AI, to drive significant progress similar to that seen in China.
Despite the country’s rich resources and 77 years of independence, Sharif expressed concern about Pakistan’s heavy debt and widespread poverty. He noted that many people struggle with basic needs and that there is a stark contrast between their hardships and the privileges of the elite.
In addition to the smartphone initiative, Sharif announced that he will personally fund the education of 1,000 agricultural graduates in China to enhance agricultural productivity with advanced technology. He also revealed Huawei’s commitment to train 200,000 young people in IT and advanced skills. A comprehensive development plan for Pakistan will be presented on August 14.
The event also saw the launch of several new initiatives, including the Commonwealth Youth Alliance Secretariat in Islamabad, the Digital Learning Portal, the PM Green Youth Movement, and the AI for Youth Programme, which provides Intel-certified skills to young people.
