ISLAMABAD: In a significant move, Pakistan’s Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved a supplementary grant of approximately $160 million for defense projects in the current fiscal year. This decision, made during a meeting led by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, comes amidst ongoing discussions surrounding the nation’s defense budget, which often garners media attention due to the military’s influential role in the political and economic landscape.

The allocation raises important conversations about finding a balance between urgent security needs and vital public services, like education and healthcare. The ECC’s approval encompasses various projects, including special allowances for the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and funding for the Anti-Rabies Vaccine.

This funding follows closely behind the government’s approval of Rs60 billion ($215 million) for Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, aimed at combating militancy, along with a 17.5 percent increase in the overall defense budget to Rs2.12 trillion ($6.15 billion) earlier this year.

Additionally, the ECC has proposed raising the special allowance for ANF employees to align it with other federal law enforcement agencies, reflecting a commitment to support those on the front lines. The financial impact of this adjustment, estimated at Rs264.744 million ($950,000), will be managed within the current year’s budget.

As discussions around the defense budget continue, questions of transparency remain at the forefront, with many advocating for more detailed disclosures beyond just the overall figures. The balance between security and public welfare is a pivotal issue for Pakistan as it navigates its future.
