Famous mountaineer Samina Baig, the first Pakistani woman to climb Mount Everest, has been transferred to Islamabad after her health worsened during a K2 expedition.

Baig, who was leading a team with Italian climber Agostino Da Polenza, had serious health issues at the K2 base camp, which required her evacuation.

She was airlifted by Pakistan Army helicopters to Skardu on Sunday and taken to the Combined Military Hospital. Her family reported she had developed lung problems, leading to her transfer to Islamabad for further tests and treatment.

Baig will undergo medical exams to assess her health issues.

Amina Shigri, another team member, also left the K2 base camp and started trekking towards Shigar on Saturday. The remaining team members, Pakistani climbers Nadima and Samana, along with four Italian colleagues, have decided to continue their K2 ascent despite the challenges.

Baig’s health scare highlights the severe physical demands of climbing the world’s highest peaks.
