A man of Pakistani descent is in critical condition after being set on fire at his store in Surrey, British Columbia, on Friday. Rahat Rao, who runs a currency exchange business in Surrey Central, was attacked by a man who threw a flammable liquid on him and then set him ablaze.
Witnesses reported seeing Rao running from the back of the store, engulfed in flames. A relative mentioned that the attack might have been part of a robbery attempt.
The police have released a photo of the suspected attacker and his vehicle. There is speculation about a possible link to the murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in the same town last year. Rao had been questioned by the police after Nijjar’s killing but details of that interview have not been disclosed.
The RCMP had previously advised Rao to install more security cameras due to concerns for his safety.
