Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that 1,000 Pakistani students will be sent to China for advanced agriculture training to boost crop yields, as reported on Sunday. During his visit to the Yangling Agricultural Demonstration Base in Xi’an, he also invited China’s North West Agriculture and Forestry University to open a campus in Pakistan and instructed officials to work on this with Chinese authorities.

While touring the facility, Sharif saw Pakistani products and a demonstration of vertical farming. He emphasized that modernizing agriculture and increasing exports are top priorities for Pakistan. The Yangling Base collaborates with 26 countries in agriculture research, with Pakistan being the first participant.

Sharif’s visit to China included meetings with President Xi Jinping, where they discussed upgrading the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and advancing its development. This was Sharif’s first meeting with Xi since taking office in 2024. The CPEC, a key part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), connects Gwadar Port in Pakistan with China’s Xinjiang province. Despite significant Chinese investments in Pakistan, the progress of various CPEC projects has slowed recently.
