On October 2, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) inaugurated the Space Applications and Research Centre (SPARC-GB) in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), marking a significant milestone as the country’s first space research hub in the region.
The inauguration ceremony, attended by GB Chief Minister Gulbar Khan, underscores SPARC-GB’s mission to address critical environmental and socio-economic challenges, particularly focusing on climate change, glacier melt, and water resource management.
SUPARCO Chairman Muhammad Yousuf Khan highlighted the center’s commitment to supporting the local community through job creation and capacity building. He emphasized that SPARC-GB will enhance satellite monitoring capabilities, which is vital for managing the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters. This initiative represents a proactive step towards leveraging space technology for the benefit of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
