Pakistan has been elected to the Board of Governors (BOG) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for a two-year term from 2024 to 2026. This decision was reached by consensus during the 68th Session of the IAEA’s General Conference in Vienna, marking Pakistan’s 21st term on the board.
A spokesperson from the Foreign Office emphasized that this election acknowledges Pakistan’s long-standing commitment to the IAEA’s mission of promoting peaceful nuclear energy. The country has consistently contributed to the development of IAEA policies and programs.
As a founding member of the IAEA, Pakistan has maintained a fruitful partnership with the agency, particularly in the peaceful applications of nuclear energy. Notably, Pakistan hosts the Anchor Centre for Cancer Care as part of the IAEA’s Rays of Hope initiative, along with four Collaboration Centres focused on Food & Agriculture, Nuclear Safety & Security, Water Resource Management, and Innovative Nuclear Technology Applications.
Currently, Pakistan operates six nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 3,530 MW of clean energy, with an additional 1,200 MW nuclear power plant under construction. This election to the IAEA’s Board of Governors underscores Pakistan’s ongoing role in advancing global nuclear cooperation.
