Pakistan Grapples With Internet Disruptions As Sea-Cable Damage

By

April 30, 2024

According to various reports, the fiber optic cable connecting Singapore to Pakistan and Europe has been damaged at multiple points, with five cuts reported.

These cuts have caused significant disruptions in internet services, especially for traffic coming from the east. It’s estimated that it will take about a month to fully repair the cable.

The disruptions have mainly affected internet traffic from the east, impacting both Transworld and PTCL (Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited). Although less than 10% of internet traffic comes from the east, Pakistani users have complained about difficulties accessing the internet, particularly at night.

To address the issue, PTCL has redirected internet traffic from the east to other channels. However, users may still face difficulties until the fiber optic line is completely fixed.

This isn’t the first time Pakistan has experienced internet disruptions. Earlier this month, on Tuesday, March 5th, similar problems occurred due to damage to submarine cables in the Red Sea.
