The Pakistani government has announced the deployment of the army to maintain law and order during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, which will be held in Islamabad on October 15-16. This marks the first time Pakistan is hosting the event.
The decision, made under Article 245 of the Constitution, allows the government to call upon military forces to assist civil authorities in ensuring peace and security. According to a notification from the Interior Ministry, the federal government is “pleased to authorize the deployment of requisite strength of the Pakistan Army in aid of civil powers from October 5 to 17” in the capital.
The army will be responsible for overseeing the security of key government buildings and the Red Zone in Islamabad. While paramilitary Rangers are already present in the capital, the military’s involvement aims to enhance security measures during the summit.
Preparations for the event have been completed, with heads of state and delegations from the eight SCO member countries expected to attend.
