Pakistan has made significant strides in the United Nations (UN) E-Government Development Index (EGDI) 2024, rising from 150th place in 2022 to 136th. This impressive jump marks the country’s transition from the “Middle EGDI category” to the “High EGDI category” for the first time, reflecting substantial advancements in its digital government capabilities.
The E-Government Development Index value for Pakistan has increased to 0.5095, up from 0.42380 two years ago. While the country still lags behind global leaders like Denmark (0.9847) and regional frontrunners such as Singapore (0.969) and the Maldives (0.6745), this improvement is a noteworthy achievement.
Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a digital Pakistan. At an event in Islamabad, she stressed the importance of collaborative efforts to foster innovation among the youth and underscored the role of the private sector in achieving digital transformation.
She highlighted the government’s initiatives to ensure stable and fast digital connectivity and celebrated the nation’s advancement in cyber security, achieving top-tier status in that domain. Shaza Fatima noted that Pakistan is one of only two countries in Asia to move from the middle tier to the high tier of digital e-governance, describing this as a significant milestone.
