Pakistan has officially commenced construction on a new 1,200 megawatt nuclear power plant at Chashma Barrage in Punjab, with significant support from China. This announcement was made by Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).

In his message congratulating China on its 40 years as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Anwar highlighted the importance of strengthening collaborative ties between the two nations.

Currently, Pakistan operates six nuclear power plants that collectively generate 3,530 megawatts, all established with Chinese assistance. Anwar stated, “Another plant is under construction with China,” emphasizing the ongoing partnership.

The collaborative projects are anticipated to produce 4,730 megawatts of electricity at competitive costs. Additionally, Pakistan is generating 1,100 megawatts from two nuclear plants located at Karachi’s Paradise Point.

The government is also advancing four nuclear power plants at Chashma Barrage, with two designed to generate 320 megawatts each and the other two 340 megawatts each.

Chairman Anwar expressed optimism for further cooperation with China in various sectors, including food and agriculture, health, water resource management, and industrial applications, highlighting the potential for expanded bilateral collaboration.
