In the past 10 days, Karachi has witnessed a surge in heat stroke cases, with over 100 reported incidents. As per Dawn News, Dr. Irfan Siddiqui, the head of the heat stroke department at Jinnah Hospital Karachi, revealed that 80 cases were documented there, while Civil Hospital Karachi recorded more than 50 cases during this period.
Dr. Siddiqui emphasized that the rising temperatures in the city have also led to an increase in gastroenteritis cases, with over 30 cases reported just yesterday, primarily occurring between 12 noon and 5 pm.
The majority of patients seeking treatment are laborers or individuals engaged in outdoor work. It’s worth noting that the Meteorological Department issued a heat wave alert on May 19, predicting high temperatures across Pakistan, including Sindh, from May 21 to 27. Consequently, the Sindh Disaster Management Authority issued safety advisories.
According to the advisory, daytime temperatures may range between 35 to 40 degrees Celsius from May 21 to 23, with a further rise to 45 degrees Celsius anticipated from May 23 to 27. In anticipation of the heat wave in Karachi, government hospitals have been instructed to remain vigilant, with medical staff on standby, and special heat stroke wards have been established.
