Dubai is planning to build a new terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, costing a huge $34.8 billion. Once finished, it’s expected to become the busiest airport in the world, able to handle up to 260 million passengers. This new terminal will take over operations from Dubai International Airport within 10 years.
The project will include creating a whole city around the airport, housing around a million people and attracting big companies in logistics and air transport. The new airport will be five times bigger than the current one and cover an area of 70 square kilometers. It will have 400 aircraft gates, five runways, and advanced technology to handle 12 million tons of cargo each year.
Construction will be done in phases, with the first phase expected to be finished in 10 years and able to handle 150 million passengers annually. This project is aimed at supporting Dubai’s aviation growth for the next 40 years and aligning with the ambitious plans of the hub airline, Emirates. Additionally, the airport will focus on being environmentally friendly, aiming for LEED gold certification.
Dubai International Airport saw a significant increase in passengers last year, reaching 86.9 million, with over 416,000 flight movements.
