NADRA Allegedly Leaks Personal Info of 2.7 Million Citizens: JIIT Report

By

March 28, 2024

A report from a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has brought attention to a serious issue involving the leakage of citizens’ data by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

In response, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has instructed the Interior Ministry to collaborate with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and Military Intelligence to investigate further.

The report indicates that between 2019 and 2023, data from approximately 2.7 million Pakistanis was compromised, allegedly involving NADRA offices in Multan, Peshawar, and Karachi.

According to the JIT, the leaked data traveled from Multan to Peshawar, then overseas to Dubai, and was reportedly sold in places like Argentina and Romania. The JIT recommends taking action against senior NADRA officials implicated in the leak.

Formed in March 2023, the JIT, led by the FIA Director of Cybercrime, investigated a cyberattack that exposed sensitive information, including military personnel data.

After presenting its findings to the interim Prime Minister, NADRA has been directed to address the recommendations promptly. Measures to enhance data security, as instructed by the Prime Minister, are being implemented.
