In a remarkable medical breakthrough, 11-month-old conjoined twins Mirha and Minal have been successfully separated in a 14-hour surgery in Ankara, Turkey. The surgery involved a dedicated team of 60 doctors and marks a significant milestone in pediatric medicine.

Born in Pakistan with their heads fused, the twins faced numerous challenges, particularly with movement. Their family’s desperate search for help led them to reach out to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who facilitated the necessary medical care.

The journey began when London-based pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Owase Jeelani saw potential for the twins’ separation but faced prohibitive costs in the UK. Inspired by their plight, he contacted President Erdogan, who ensured that the twins received treatment at Bilkent City Hospital in Turkey.

After months of careful monitoring, the complex separation surgery was performed in two stages on July 19, led by Dr. Jeelani along with Turkish surgeons Dr. Harun Demirci and Dr. Hasan Murat Ergani. The successful procedure has given the twins a new lease on life.

Dr. Aziz Ahmet Surel, the hospital’s coordinating chief physician, praised the international collaboration that made this surgery possible, highlighting it as a triumph of shared knowledge and expertise. “Seeing the healthy, smiling faces of the babies now is an indescribable joy,” he said, reflecting on the incredible transformation since their arrival.
