The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) has postponed the ninth and matric exams scheduled from May 21-27 due to an expected heatwave. According to the notification issued, this decision was made following a heatwave alert from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
The notification stated, “The said examination will now continue from 28th May, 2024 as per schedule. The revised schedule of the postponed papers will be issued later.”
This decision follows the announcement by the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) that exams slated to start on May 22 have been deferred for five days until May 27 due to the heatwave in Sindh. The intermediate exams, originally scheduled to start on May 22, will now begin on May 27.
Heatwave Alert
Karachi citizens have been enduring a sweltering heat spell for the past few weeks, with a significant rise in temperatures expected over the next 10 days. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted three heatwaves in various cities over the next 25 days.
High pressure in the upper atmosphere is expected to cause heatwave conditions in most parts of the country, particularly in Punjab and Sindh, from May 21, with a severe heatwave anticipated from May 23 to 27. Daytime temperatures are likely to remain 4 to 6 degrees centigrade above normal in Sindh and Punjab from May 21 to 23, and 6 to 8°C from May 23 to 27.
In Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Balochistan, daytime temperatures are likely to be 4 to 6°C above normal from May 21 to 27.
The advisory urged authorities to stay alert and take necessary measures to address the heatwave conditions.
