Lahore is ramping up enforcement efforts to tackle the issue of motorcyclists riding without helmets and licenses. Authorities have launched a strict operation targeting riders at major entry and exit points around the city.
Personnel have been deployed at crucial locations including Ravi Bridge, Saggian, Thokar Niaz Baig, Babu Sabu, Ada Plot, Nawaz Sharif Interchange, and ten additional spots like Harbanspura, Gajjumata, and Bhatta Chowk.
Currently, motorcyclists caught without helmets can enter the city after paying a fine. However, starting next week, helmets will be mandatory for city entry, and those without will be barred. Additionally, the authorities plan to crack down on rickshaws and public transport vehicles using LPG cylinders.
Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer, Amara Athar, is also spearheading a campaign against motorcyclists riding without valid driving licenses. Offenders will face a Rs. 2,000 fine and their motorcycles will be impounded until a valid license is produced.
Chief Traffic Officer Athar highlighted that obtaining a driving license costs Rs. 930 and urged citizens to comply with the law. The 42-day validity period for learner’s permits has been removed, requiring motorcyclists to have a full license to use public roads.
