Thirteen hundred containers of Pakistani rice were stranded at the Mombasa port. The intervention of Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, led to the release of the containers.
A formal complaint was lodged with Kenya’s Ministry of Trade, Investment, and Industry. Commerce Minister Jam Kamal emphasized the importance of timely handling of the rice consignment.
The Ministry of Commerce cited the current situation in the Red Sea in the letter as the reason for the delay, aimed at saving Pakistani exporters from potential losses due to the delay.
On May 31, 2024, the Kenyan government issued a special gazette notice on the matter. The Ministry of Commerce stated that the Kenyan government released 1300 containers at zero rate.
Kenya allowed access to Pakistani rice at zero rate until November 30, 2024. The gazette granted duty-free entry for 34,414.5 metric tons of Grade 1 white Basmati rice.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, bilateral trade between Pakistan and Kenya through Mombasa port is expected to have positive effects.
