Karachi's Water Crisis: Areas Facing Up to 21-Day Waits

By

Sep 13, 2024

The water crisis in Karachi’s Central District has reached alarming levels, with residents in areas like North Karachi, Shadman, and Bufferzone experiencing severe shortages. Many of these neighborhoods now have to endure waits of up to 21 days between water supplies, which are available for just a brief 24-hour period.

The situation has forced residents to rely on expensive water tankers, an option that is out of reach for many. This has sparked significant concern about how families can manage without a consistent and affordable water supply.

A resident from Makin, North Karachi, expressed frustration, saying, “We can’t afford water tankers. How are we supposed to get by?”

The growing discontent has led to protests, with residents demonstrating against the illegal hydrants that exacerbate the crisis. The unchecked tanker mafia is seen as profiting from the water shortages, further straining the city’s already inadequate water infrastructure.
