Students at the University of Karachi staged a significant protest on Thursday, expressing their discontent over several pressing issues, including a recent fee increase, steep penalties for late payments, inadequate transportation services, declining faculty numbers, crumbling infrastructure, and escalating campus security concerns. They warned of intensified protests if their grievances remain unaddressed.
Leaders from various student organizations came together for a joint press conference, criticizing the university administration’s handling of these matters. Notable figures included Hamza Alam from Islami Jamiat Talaba, Azhar Ali from Imamia Students Organisation (ISO), Ali Bukhari from People’s Students Federation (PSF), and Waqas Meer from Punjabi Students Association (PSA). They highlighted that many issues had persisted despite previous protests.
The student leaders voiced frustration over the administration’s decision to raise semester fees while imposing heavy fines on late payments, all without providing essential services. They also expressed alarm over the increase in criminal activities on campus, including motorcycle and cellphone thefts. Plans for a major protest outside the administration block were announced for the upcoming week, with a firm commitment to continue their campaign until their demands are met.
