Former wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal has called for an end to frequent captain changes in Pakistan cricket, urging those in charge to prioritize improving players’ fundamental skills.
In an interview with Geo News, Akmal criticized the tendency to discuss changing captains whenever new leaders take charge of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He questioned whether these changes are motivated by personal preferences rather than genuine improvements in the team’s performance.
Akmal’s comments follow Pakistan’s recent cricketing setbacks, including a Test series whitewash against Bangladesh on home soil. He argued that with the same players and systems in place, simply changing the captain will not resolve underlying issues.
“Instead of focusing on changing the leadership, everyone involved—captain, coach, and selectors—should reassess their approach and think differently,” Akmal suggested. He emphasized that improving the team’s overall strategy and fundamentals, rather than swapping captains, would be more beneficial.
He voiced support for Babar Azam, recommending that he remain captain until the Champions Trophy. “What difference does it make if the captain remains the same?” Akmal questioned, highlighting that continuity in leadership could provide stability.
Akmal also stressed the importance of returning to the basics of cricket, reflecting on the standards of domestic and club cricket from 20-30 years ago. He cautioned that without addressing fundamental issues, such as player skills and strategy, the team will continue to face challenges, and changing captains alone will not lead to meaningful improvements.
