In a historic move, Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been elected as the president of the International Cricket Council (ICC), making him the youngest person ever to hold the position. Shah’s appointment was secured unopposed on Monday.
Transition and Vision
Greg Barclay, the current ICC chairman, will conclude his term in November, with Shah set to officially take over on December 1. Shah’s ascension to the role comes after Barclay chose not to seek a third term.
In his acceptance speech, Shah outlined his vision for the future of cricket. He emphasized the importance of cricket’s inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics as a key opportunity for expanding the sport’s global footprint.
“I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah said, underscoring his commitment to working with the ICC team and member nations to globalize the sport further.
Shah also highlighted his focus on balancing various formats of the game, leveraging advanced technologies, and introducing ICC’s major events to new international markets.
“Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before,” Shah concluded, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter in cricket’s global journey.
