Japan has changed its rules for foreign workers’ visas recently. It’s the first big update since 2019 when the program started.
They did this to fix the problem of not having enough workers, especially in jobs like driving and transportation. Now, foreign workers can stay longer, up to five years.
They added four new types of jobs to the visa program. These are in transportation like driving buses, taxis, or trucks, and also in forestry and timber industries.
Foreign workers must work for companies approved by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism.
Japan needs more workers because not enough babies are being born, and many people are getting old. Also, more people are shopping online, so there aren’t enough delivery drivers.
To fix this, the government is making rules to limit how much drivers can work overtime. They call this the “2024 problem.”
Japan wants to bring in about 820,000 skilled foreign workers over the next five years, starting from April.
Foreign workers need to speak Japanese pretty well, at least at level N3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
The government is also changing some rules to make it easier for skilled workers to come and work in Japan. They want to make sure these workers have what they need to succeed.
