Italy Introduces Online Work Permits for Remote Employees

May 11, 2024

Italy has rolled out a new, simpler process for intra-company transfers, offering exciting opportunities for international professionals. Launched in late 2023, this update allows non-EU employees with previous experience at Italian companies abroad to work for those same companies in Italy without being restricted by yearly quotas.

No-Quota Work Permit:

The No-Quota Work Permit is a form of work authorization that allows experienced foreign employees of a company to transfer and work at the company’s branch in a specific country without facing limits on foreign workers. This speeds up and simplifies the relocation process for employees and enables companies to utilize their global talent pool more effectively.

Intra-Company Mobility:

Previously, obtaining a work permit in Italy involved navigating a quota system, which often caused delays and uncertainties. The introduction of the no-quota intra-company work permit removes this barrier, making it much easier for companies to move essential staff to their Italian offices.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for this new permit, applicants must have worked for the Italian company or its non-EU subsidiaries for at least 12 months within the last 48 months. This demonstrates an existing work relationship and facilitates a smooth transition to the Italian branch.

Application Process:

In another positive move, applications for the no-quota intra-company work permit can now be submitted electronically. This online system offers greater convenience and efficiency for both employers and employees.

Required Documentation:

While the application process has been simplified, prospective applicants await further details on the necessary documents. Specific guidelines outlining the required documents for successful application submission are yet to be released by the government. However, comprehensive instructions are expected to be provided soon.

Progressive Approach:

Italy’s initiative to ease the employment of non-EU workers demonstrates its commitment to promoting diversity and embracing global talent. By removing quota limits, the country shows its dedication to building a more inclusive and dynamic workforce.

Boost for International Businesses:

The introduction of the no-quota intra-company work permit and its online application system represents a significant improvement for businesses with international operations. This streamlined process will make it easier for companies to deploy their existing workforce expertise across borders, facilitating smoother and more efficient business operations in Italy.
