The federal cabinet has given officers of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) with a rank of grade 18 or higher the authority to intercept phone calls and messages, as well as trace calls through any telecommunications system.

This decision was communicated through SRO 1005(I)2024, dated July 8, 2024, by the Ministry of IT and Telecom, under Section 54 of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act, 1996.

The SRO states that this authorization is for national security purposes and to help in catching offenders. This includes the power to trace and record communications from various apps, including WhatsApp.
