The death toll from the blast at a liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder filling shop in Hyderabad’s Preetabad area has risen to 24, following the death of another child on Thursday.
Two-year-old Haram succumbed to his injuries at the Burns Ward of Civil Hospital Karachi, where the hospital administration confirmed that 67% of his body had been burned.
Four additional injured individuals are currently being treated at Karachi Civil Hospital.
The incident occurred on May 30, when an LPG cylinder exploded in a shop on the ground floor of a building, causing the fire to spread to the upper levels where families resided.
The explosion resulted in serious burn injuries for at least 60 people, mostly children, who were initially treated at Liaquat University Hospital (LUH) before being transferred to Karachi for further care. Among them, 18 to 22 individuals with burns covering 80% to 90% of their bodies were referred to a major hospital in Karachi.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori distributed cash assistance to each of the 60 affected families. Addressing the grieving families, Tessori mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would visit Hyderabad after his trip to China, following a request from MQM leader Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.
Tessori emphasized the need to learn from past incidents, pointing out that minor incidents had occurred previously, but this tragedy underscored the urgency of addressing the issue of substandard cylinders, which he said was the responsibility of the administration to investigate.dministration to investigate.
