How to Register for the Punjab Free Solar Scheme 2024
In a bid to tackle rising electricity costs, the Punjab government has introduced the Roshan Gharana scheme. This innovative program aims to install solar systems in 4.5 million homes across the province, offering substantial financial relief to those struggling with high energy bills.
How the Roshan Gharana Scheme Works
The Roshan Gharana initiative provides households with solar panels through affordable installment plans. The size of the solar system provided depends on each household’s monthly electricity usage:
- Households consuming up to 50 units per month will receive a 500-watt solar system at no cost.
- Those using between 50 and 100 units will get a 1-kilowatt system.
- For monthly usage of 200 to 300 units, a 1,100-watt system will be installed, with larger systems available for higher usage levels.
Eligibility and Registration
To qualify for the scheme, households must have an annual electricity consumption of up to 500 units and must be tax filers. Residents receiving government assistance or with a history of electricity theft will not be eligible.
Registration is simple. Interested residents should send their identity card number and electricity bill reference number to 8800. Eligible households will be chosen through a draw and offered the opportunity to acquire solar systems via the Bank of Punjab or the National Bank.
Flexible Payment Structure
The payment plan is designed to be flexible. Consumers will pay 25% of the solar system’s cost upfront, with the remaining amount spread over five years in interest-free installments added to their electricity bills. For those using more than 500 units, the government will cover 75% of the interest.
