SOUTH LAKE TAHOE: A grizzly bear, affectionately dubbed the “burglar bear,” was caught on a security camera indulging in a jelly feast after breaking into a cabin in California.
The amusing footage, shared by cabin owner Scott Cloutier, shows the bear casually wandering through the kitchen of his South Lake Tahoe home, clearly on the hunt for a snack. The bear’s antics include rummaging through the kitchen and eventually settling down to enjoy a bottle of jelly.
In the video, the bear is seen intermittently peeking out from behind an open cabinet door, suggesting it was searching for food and inadvertently left the door ajar. Despite the bear’s stealthy raid, it remains unclear how the grizzly managed to enter the cabin, as the security camera footage only captures the kitchen scene.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife notes that bears are currently foraging intensively in preparation for their hibernation period, which typically begins in October. Different species of bears have varying hibernation patterns based on their climates. For instance, black bears can hibernate for up to seven and a half months, while grizzly bears generally hibernate between five to seven months. In contrast, Mexican Black Bears may hibernate only briefly or not at all, depending on their warmer habitats.
