Govt Rejects Plan to Suspend Social Media Apps During Muharram

Jul 6, 2024

The federal government has turned down the Punjab government’s proposal to suspend popular social media apps like Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, and WhatsApp from Muharram 6 to 11.

Instead, federal authorities will use strict security measures tailored for Muharram. They will only allow mobile phone signals to be shut down in specific areas where religious processions and large gatherings are expected.

The Punjab government had proposed the social media suspension to prevent misinformation that might increase sectarian tensions during Muharram.

His mother, Justine, told the BBC that Oran is now happier and has a “much better quality of life.”

The federal government’s decision aims to balance public safety with the need for open communication, opting for targeted signal shutdowns rather than a complete social media ban.
