On Sunday, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced that the federal government has gathered data on 4.9 million non-filers, including information about their homes, assets, foreign travel, and cars. Notices will soon be sent to enforce tax laws.
Aurangzeb said this data, collected from NADRA and other sources, aims to include non-filers in the tax system without causing unnecessary trouble. Notices will be issued centrally, with field teams reaching out to individuals only when needed. Effective measures will be taken against those who do not pay taxes.
He also thanked everyone for supporting the Tajir Dost Scheme and reported that Rs. 70 billion in tax refunds have been issued since July 1st. He emphasized the need to expand the tax base and urged provinces to legislate to include the agricultural sector.
Aurangzeb revealed that the government has uncovered Rs. 600 billion in sales tax fraud and Rs. 200 billion in customs under-invoicing. Price monitoring committees will be set up to prevent unfair practices, especially with petroleum products linked to global prices. He added that discussions on CPEC Phase Two are progressing, with working groups to be formed soon.
