The federal government has ordered stricter monitoring of social media to control the spread of hateful and inflammatory content. A letter was sent to the chief secretaries and police chiefs of all provinces, as well as Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, to ensure closer scrutiny of social media platforms.

The Ministry of Interior’s letter highlights a recent rise in harmful and divisive content on social media, which has increased sectarian tensions and posed a threat to national security. The government is concerned about the potential for sectarian unrest and wants to prevent it.

To address these issues, the government has directed authorities to restrict access to certain districts and limit public speeches during the holy month of Muharram to prevent violence. Additionally, cybersecurity measures will be enforced to stop the spread of harmful content online.

This directive comes amid ongoing security challenges and aims to foster a safer and more harmonious society by addressing the rise of hateful content on social media.
