Google introduced a new feature to its search engine that used something called generative AI. But at first, it was just an experiment, and only people using Google Chrome who signed up for it could try it out. This feature worked a bit like ChatGPT, giving a quick summary of search results to help save time.
Now, Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) is starting to become the main way people search online, even if they didn’t sign up for it. In the US, many users are already seeing it as the default option, according to a report from Search Engine Land.
If you’re using Chrome and you see SGE, it’ll show up as a shaded box at the top of your search results. It gives a brief summary of what you’re looking for and also provides links for more information. It looks like this:
Before, you could only see this if you signed up for it. But now, lots of people in the US are seeing it automatically, even if they’re not logged into their Google account.
This change might be because of rumors about OpenAI making its own search tool. OpenAI is known for its ChatGPT, which has a big user base. Google doesn’t want to lose users to OpenAI, so they’re making changes to stay competitive.
But Google is still the most popular search engine in the world. OpenAI has a tough job ahead if they want to compete with Google.
