With rising global crime rates, phone security has become a growing concern. To address this, Google is rolling out a new AI-driven anti-theft upgrade for Android devices, aimed at providing enhanced protection against phone theft.
Unveiled in May as part of Google’s broader initiative to secure user data “before, during, and after theft,” the new feature—known as Theft Detection Lock—is set to debut with Android 15. This cutting-edge tool leverages artificial intelligence, combined with the phone’s gyroscope and accelerometer, to detect suspicious movements that could indicate theft.
When the system detects erratic motion patterns, such as a sudden jerk followed by rapid acceleration, it will automatically lock the device’s screen to protect personal information.
Initially, the AI-powered feature is being rolled out to a select group of users in Brazil who joined Google’s beta program. According to ZDNET, once fully implemented, the feature will likely first appear on newer Google phones but will eventually be available on all Android 10+ devices, covering a broad range of modern Android smartphones.
