Tonight, Pakistan will have the chance to view the first Super Blue Moon of 2024 at 11:30 PM.
Astronomer Javed Iqbal explains that this event combines two rare astronomical phenomena. Today’s Super Blue Moon is also the third blue moon of this season. The upcoming three supermoons are scheduled for September 18, October 17, and November 15.
According to NASA, the next Super Blue Moon won’t occur until January 2037, making tonight’s event especially noteworthy for astronomy enthusiasts.
What is a Super Blue Moon?
A Super Blue Moon is a rare alignment of three lunar phenomena: a full moon, a blue moon, and a supermoon.
Full Moon : This occurs when the Earth, sun, and moon align, causing the moon to be fully illuminated from Earth’s perspective.
Blue Moon : Contrary to what the name suggests, a blue moon does not appear blue. Instead, it refers to the second full moon within a single calendar month. Given that the moon’s cycle is about 29.5 days and most calendar months are 30-31 days long, having two full moons in one month is quite rare, happening approximately every two to three years. Around 3% of full moons are considered blue moons.
Supermoon : This happens when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than usual.
This rare celestial event is a unique opportunity for sky watchers to enjoy a spectacular view.
